Those wonderful calendar days of repeating digits give astrologists and lottery sellers plenty of business. Those of us in the food world have no shortage of celebrations, and today, 9/9/9, is one such day: National Wienerschnitzel Day. It’s great fun to think about how these “special” days occur, and then why someone other than a specific food fanatic thought of having such a celebratory event.
Personally, I love the perfect combination of a lightly breaded turkey cutlet with a few slices of lemon to sprinkle atop. Yes, I said turkey. Once long ago, there was veal in my life as the traditional recipe would request, but now I feel much better with a sister food group. I still pound the breast, either turkey or chicken, and consider it my version of the traditional, highly popular German schnitzel.
New York even has its own schnitzel truck (Schnitzel & Things) that travels through the boroughs. Follow the truck as it wends through the boroughs.
